Let's “Jazz” this Class up
At DCSZ, we foster an inclusive learning community that values and respects individuals with diverse personalities. In addition to textbook-based learning,we provide various educational experiences beyond the classroom.
In support of this idea, our headquarter EiM organized this Diversity Arts Series for our students. The series brings world-class practitioners together to facilitate workshops and master classes with our students.
Furthermore, our students had the opportunity to engage with the musicians and even perform on stage themselves. They introduced our students to the captivating world of Jazz, and it truly kickstarted the music topic for our year 7 and 8 groups this term.
The group conducted engaging workshops with our year 7 classes, with students learning how to improvise on their chosen wind or brass instrument. It was remarkable to witness our students gaining confidence and expressing themselves through improvisation as the workshops progressed. In addition, our year 10 music group had the opportunity to spend time with the Jazz Quartet, learning the fundamentals of jazz performance on their own instruments.
Let's take a look at the feedback from Juan K, a Year 10 student:
Our rehearsals with the jazz group this week was very informative. I enjoyed getting to know the other musicians and their impressive talents. It was fascinating to learn about the unique form of jazz and how the group collaborates on the stage.
The interactions and lessons shared during these sessions were invaluable, allowing our students to deepen their understanding of jazz and enhance their musical skills. To conclude this enriching experience, we invited our year 6 students to join us on the final afternoon to witness the incredible progress made by our senior school students. The enthusiasm displayed by our students throughout the visit has been truly inspiring.
We are delighted to have planted the seeds of jazz within our school, and we hope this marks the beginning of a vibrant jazz culture that will continue to flourish.
A big thank you to the jazz quartet, and well done to our students! Additionally, we would like to express our deep appreciation to Mr Edmund Shellard, Director of Arts at DCSZ, for organizing and making the event possible.
