Support, Educate and Empower: A Mental Health Initiative at DCSZ

- Ellie Chafer, Senior School Deputy Headteacher (Pastoral & College DSL)

In an increasingly fast-paced world, the conversation around mental health has gained significant momentum. The Mental Health Warriors programme, in which students across all key stages are trained and certified, highlights the transformative power of community, support, and open dialogue. We all face day-to-day challenges that can impact our mental health, and we must recognise its importance alongside physical health for our well-being, personal growth, and academic achievements.

The primary goal is to break the stigma surrounding mental health: “Fostering a culture of compassion and empathy at Dulwich College Suzhou, without expecting anything in return.” Mental Health Warriors are trained in Mental Health First Aid, equipping them to recognise signs of anxiety, depression, eating disorders, suicidal ideation, and self-harm. This training enhances their active listening skills, enabling them to identify symptoms and respond appropriately, fostering a culture of openness and support within our school community.

Through student-led assemblies, participants educate their peers about mental health issues and encourage open dialogue. As students poignantly noted during a recent mental health assembly, “Mental health affects every aspect of life, from school performance to relationships. It's normal to feel overwhelmed, especially during holidays or with school pressures, and so important for us to help each other through such times’’.

A crucial element is establishing safe environments where students can share their emotions without fear of judgment. Our nurturing space promotes emotional expression, enabling individuals to discuss their challenges and foster a stronger community bond.

Collaboration with teachers, the student body, and the counselling team enhances this effort. This teamwork ensures that students have the resources and support needed to address mental health effectively. Additionally, the programme emphasises staff well-being by providing training in Mental Health First Aid Level 2, equipping them to support their own mental health and that of their students.

Education lies at the heart of this endeavour. By organising workshops and activities, the Mental Health Warriors equip students with practical coping strategies to manage stress and anxiety. This proactive approach empowers peers to take charge of their mental well-being, fostering resilience and self-advocacy.

Overall, the Mental Health Warriors and Mental Health First Aid training effort is not just about advocating for mental health; it is about creating a community where every student feels heard, valued, cared for and supported. Together, participants are transforming individual lives and reshaping the narrative around mental health in our school, truly empowering minds and building a brighter future for all.
