Nurturing Growth: Year 7’s Journey in the Cross Curricular Unit
This term, our Year 7 students embarked on an exciting journey focused on health and wellbeing, exploring the engaging question: How might we change our school community to better promote health and wellbeing? Their exploration was not just theoretical; it was hands-on, immersive, and full of meaningful experiences that encouraged both personal growth and community engagement.

One of the highlights of this unit was a trip to the Suzhou Olympic Center, where students had the opportunity to study various facilities designed to promote health and wellbeing. From fitness centers to basketball courts, they witnessed first-hand how such spaces can foster active lifestyles. The day was filled with activities, including parkour, aviation, and fitness workshops, where students pushed their boundaries and discovered new ways to stay active and engaged.
In addition to these physical activities, students participated in ATL (Approaches to Learning) sessions delivered by an excellent group of teachers. These sessions covered vital topics such as public speaking, presenting, research skills, the effective use of AI, and collaborating inclusively in multilingual teams. They even learned how to create impactful displays, equipping them with essential skills for both their academic and personal lives.
To further enrich their understanding, students took on research projects to evaluate healthy options available at local shops. This not only sharpened their analytical skills but also helped them appreciate the importance of making informed food choices. By collecting and analysing data, they learned how local businesses contribute to the health of our community.

A particularly inspiring part of the unit was a health talk from doctors at Jiahui Health Suzhou Clinic. The doctors provided valuable insights into various aspects of health, emphasising the importance of both physical and mental wellbeing. This experience encouraged students to think critically about their own health habits and sparked thoughtful discussions about how they can take charge of their wellbeing.
As the unit culminated, students showcased their learning through presentations where they proposed and justified changes to our school to enhance the health and wellbeing of our community. Their innovative ideas reflected not only creativity but also a deep understanding of the needs of their peers. From suggestions for more outdoor spaces to promote physical activity to initiatives aimed at improving mental health support, their proposals were impressive and thought-provoking.
This cross-curricular unit has not only equipped our Year 7 students with knowledge about health and wellbeing but has also empowered them to become advocates for positive change within our school community. We are eager to see how their ideas will shape our practices in the future, and we are committed to supporting them as they continue their journey toward healthier lifestyles.
Together, we can create a school environment that prioritises health and wellbeing for all!
