No Carbon November: Small Actions for a Greener Future

Each of us has the ability to make a positive impact in the world, and we are excited to take action. In November, Dulwich College Suzhou actively joined the 'No Carbon November' initiative launched by our headquarters, EiM. Our goal was to explore innovative strategies to reduce our carbon footprint and promote a healthier environment.

“We need to put faith into action, knowing that while we may only be one small person our actions matter, and when combined with others we are a part of creating change.” - Mr d’Arcy Lunn, Group Head of Sustainability & Global Citizenship

Our students engaged in numerous activities aimed at reducing their carbon footprint. A key part of the 'Teaspoons of Change' initiative - small yet impactful ideas and actions that positively affect people and the planet each day in November - the No Carbon November program highlights the importance of sustainability and fosters awareness of our shared responsibility for the world.

DUCKS

- Ms Holly Ann Wood, DUCKS Global Citizenship and Sustainability Lead

No Carbon November has been a fantastic community event at DUCKS.

We kicked off the initiative with a Sustainability Carousel, where parents from various industries shared the steps their companies are taking to become more sustainable. Throughout the month, weekly challenges were held in classrooms to engage children with global issues and encourage sustainable habits. These challenges included turning off the lights, reducing food waste, saving paper, and planting seeds.

We were thrilled to receive nearly 40 videos created by the children at home, showcasing the small changes they made, such as taking public transport, turning off taps, and recycling.

In addition, we introduced Conscious Wednesdays, where the children enjoyed delicious vegetarian meals. It shows what a difference a few small changes can make.

Junior School

- Mr Rowan Kohll, Junior School Sustainability and Global Citizenship Lead

This year, No Carbon November has seen the children doing some amazing things. They have made beautiful posters and videos about how to reduce carbon emissions, engaged in competitions to win the Green DCSZ Tiger for the most eco-friendly classroom, and set up a system to monitor food waste in the dining room as a House Competition! It has been a wonderful display of environmental awareness and engaging education across the whole school.

Senior School

Senior School students engaged in a very special collaboration this year. Some students from Year 11 to Year 13 - Eunseo B, Milo W, Zain T, Sarah O, Karen L, Shirley C, Eunju K, and Kevin W - attended Carbon Literacy Training at IBSS Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU). They worked alongside students from XJTLU and developed a deeper understanding of sustainability, with a specific focus on actions that organizations can take.

As members of the global community, we have a responsibility to protect the Earth and preserve a clean environment for future generations. Let us take action together, understanding that even small steps can be significant and are worth pursuing.
