DCSZ Students Pushing Their Own Boundaries through MUN
Last week, students in Year 5 and 6 were given an opportunity to take part in a Dulwich-wide Junior School Model United Nation’s conference.
In total, 15 delegates from DCSZ Junior School attended the virtual conference, within which they were assigned a country and asked to write speeches and resolutions regarding how their chosen country would support refugees from around the world. One overwhelming message which the conference was aiming to deliver was that ‘to be called a refugee is the opposite of an insult. It is a badge of strength, courage, and victory’.
Jessie P, 6D
Jessie P was nominated to deliver the opening delegate speech at the conference. The speech was seen by hundreds of students and staff members across six Dulwich Junior Schools. In her speech, she spoke of how the small actions of people can have a big effect on others. She said, ‘the smallest of ripples can lead to huge waves’. This was such a wonderful phrase and reinforces our sustainable message that ‘Teaspoons of Change’ can have a huge impact.
Nevae L, 6C
I enjoyed writing and delivering our speeches to the other delegates. I was nervous at the start, but because I had to plan out my speech, I felt prepared. It’s important that you do the best you can, and that you give it your all.
If I was to describe the MUN conference, I would use the words inspirational, intriguing, and enjoyable.
Krystal G, 6S
The emergency situation, which took place on the Friday morning, was the most interesting. Trying to find a solution to such an urgent fictional interesting was educational, and has helped me become more open-minded. Even though Friday was the PTC day, it made me feel special to be invited into the school and be one of the only children on campus. All in all, the MUN was really fun and I would recommend other children in Years 5 and 6 to give it a try. Remember, being nervous shows that you care deeply about something. Plan and prepare, and you’ll be fine.
Our Senior School students also held MUN in February. Let's see what one of our students learned from this:
Rebecca F, 12D
Hello! My name is Rebecca, and I am a Year 12 student new to Dulwich College. I have been doing MUN for 2 years and I am Vice President of the Dulwich College Suzhou MUN Team. MUN has shaped me to be the person I am today in multiple ways. Not only does MUN help one academically but it also helps one as an individual person. Personally, it has helped me in terms of analyzing. As we are each given the resolution to pass or not pass, we need good analyzing skills to see if there are any grammatical mistakes in it, if the sentence just doesn’t make sense, and/or overall, if we should pass it. In terms of shaping you individually, it has helped me become more confident. As you need to speak in front of large groups of people (for example, when you are the main submitter of your resolution) or if you’re simply asking another delegate a question about what they said, you need your voice to be loud, clear and heard. I look forward to the future conferences we as a school will attend! Thank you!
