A Great Success - Junior School Putting Seussical on Stage

Last term, our Junior School put on an outstanding performance of "Seussical" on stage. Both students and teachers dedicated extensive time, including weekends, to preparing the sets and rehearsals. Now, let's delve into the video of the production and also the reflections of our director, Miss Woodruff, as well as some of the talented students who took part in the production!

Miss Woodruff, Junior School Music Teacher , Director for the production

We began preparations for Seussical back in September, and from the very beginning, our rehearsals became something I looked forward to each week. I had so much fun preparing this show, with its exhilarating music, lively dances, and a relatable story that celebrates the power of friendship and imagination, every rehearsal was full of energy.

This production was a true testament of our students’ hard work, commitment, and creative spirits. It was a joy to witness their growth, both individually and as a team, as they dedicated their time and effort to bringing Dr. Seuss's whimsical characters and charming stories to life. Throughout the rehearsal process, we shared in many small celebrations, whether it be mastering a challenging dance move or finally getting the delivery of a line just right. These moments of triumph brought us all closer together and reinforced the incredible sense of support and camaraderie fostered within our cast.

I would like to express my gratitude to the students, their families, Mrs Roux, Ms Turner, Ms Odette, Ms Hawker and the staff that contributed to and supported our production. I am already planning and looking forward to next year!

Daniel L, 6S, Horton the Elephant

I have been in the Junior School drama for three years. At first, I didn’t even want to join, but my mum still signed up for me, and I said to my mum “I will tell my teacher to let me be a tree” but I still got a role that had some lines. After my first performance I felt more and more confident and I started to like drama, so this school year, I decided to audition for a lead character and luckily, I got the role of Horton. I was grateful for the opportunity and wanted to do well. I really liked the play “Seussical.” The songs are so beautiful, and the story is fantastic and fun. It’s about using your imagination as wildly as you want. It also encourages children to stand up for their beliefs like Horton because anything is possible.

It’s amazing to see how a play is produced from beginning to completion and I’m proud to be a part of it. I felt really nervous before the performance but when the play was finished, I felt as light as a feather.

What I enjoyed the most about the preparation is that we got to practice on Saturdays. We could spend time with our friends, and I really enjoyed the teamwork. Teamwork makes the dream work!

Andy J, 6S, The Cat in the Hat

The most special part of drama this time was that it included lots of actions, feeling and some funny parts, which entertained both the audience and the actors. Also, I was able to understand more about acting and how including emotion and expression is very important in drama. My favourite part of Production was when I got to wear my costume for the first time because I got to learn how I would look when I was on the stage and it was very cool to see everyone performing in their costumes. I also enjoyed when I first got assigned the role of Cat in the Hat – it was exciting to learn about the character that I would be practicing.

Amy Amin L, 4S, Jungle Citizen

Dancing and singing were my most favourite parts about participating in the drama production. I especially like to perform with my friends (all of them are drama students) and when we were singing and dancing, I felt our friendship and passion. I enjoyed attending all the Saturday rehearsals – it was exciting to met my friends and practice together for our performance. When I was saying my lines on stage, I was so nervous! But my fellow Jungle Citizens gave me bravery and power. It was not only me who performed, together we all created the performance of Seussical!!!!

Siu K, 4C, Wickersham Brother

This is my second drama production. This year, it was exciting to dance, sing and build relationships with each other in Production. We also learnt new skills while rehearsing. We were successful in our performance because we worked together on the stage. The most special part about being in Production is that you get to work as a team with people who you don’t usually work with. Seussical was more enjoyable than other productions because of the cartoony characters. It was fun, but I felt a bit nervous performing to the others. I was happy that the audience was laughing when the Wickershams ran away from Horton on the stairs.

Seoah C, 5Z, Who

This was my first year in production, and it was a great experience. I enjoyed a lot of different things before and during the performance. I really liked learning the songs one by one and being able to sing and dance to them. I also enjoyed adding some of my own faces and expressions to the dance moves.  Overall, my favourite part was the Saturday rehearsals. Even though they were on weekends, it was nice because we got to spend a lot of time practicing all together and having fun. It was a fortunate experience for us all to work together and learn to cooperate. My most enjoyable experience in the real performance was when I got onstage. I love being onstage. I felt so nervous before the show, but when I was performing, I didn’t feel scared or nervous anymore! It felt unbelievable that I was actually doing it, but I couldn’t help feeling happy. I enjoyed EVERYTHING!!!
