Building Confident Leaders: Leadership Development at DCSZ
In January, three Primary Junior School student leaders and five Senior School leaders from Dulwich College Suzhou traveled to Dulwich College Seoul to attend the annual EiM Student Leadership Conference.
This four-day event provided an exceptional opportunity for our students to engage with around 100 peers from EiM schools across China, Seoul, Singapore, London, New Zealand, Switzerland, and beyond. Through exchanging ideas and experiences, they deepened their understanding of leadership and collaboration while building lasting friendships.
Students explored different leadership styles and developed valuable skills by participating in interactive workshops on communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. This experience encouraged them to reflect on their own leadership approaches and identify areas for personal growth.
From Mr Thomas Evans
Three of our Year 6 students participated in the Student Leadership Conference. Their participation developed these students' personal and professional growth, enabling their experiences to positively influence both themselves and our wider school community.
The conference emphasised creating positive change. Students were equipped with the knowledge and skills to identify genuine needs within our own school community. They learnt to develop actionable plans for creating positive change, fostering a sense of agency and empowerment. We are all excited to see this action plan unfold over the next few months.
Ultimately, the conference inspired students to set clear goals for their future leadership roles, equipping them with the confidence and tools needed to make a meaningful impact in our school and beyond.

From Ms Yuki Tang
Dulwich College Suzhou provides ongoing leadership training to instill a sense of purpose beyond titles and equip student leaders with essential skills to drive positive change.
A key opportunity is the EiM Student Leadership Conference, where five Senior School leaders this year developed both soft and hard leadership skills. They explored qualities of impactful leaders and applied the MISO method to identify real community needs, refining their action plans for meaningful initiatives.
Beyond this, student leaders receive regular training. Upon appointment, Mr Huckle, Head of Multilingual Learning and Language Development, led a workshop on inclusive leadership, encouraging reflection on fostering inclusivity. To support Prefects in leading change, Dr. Jones, Head of Senior School, conducted a session on Kotter’s 8-Step Change Model, providing a structured approach to transformation.
These are just a few of the many training opportunities designed to help student leaders grow, impact their peers, and contribute to the community. Through these initiatives, we believe they will gain confidence and succeed in their leadership journeys.

Y12 Isabel L (Head Prefect of Global Citizenship)
“My greatest takeaway from this conference was how directly addressing the community's needs would likely foster more effective change than acting in a way that you (personally) would think could benefit the community. ”
Y12 Nicholas Y (Student Council Vice President)
“This conference allowed me to meet many inspirational and motivational leaders from around the globe. There are various leadership qualities that I saw within the leaders, therefore I will use this opportunity as a chance to develop my character as a leader, learning from their positive attributes.”
Y6 Julia W (Head Prefect of Primary Junior School)
“This Leadership conference has helped me develop my communication skills and social skills. It helped me with communication skills because I learned that communicating more with other people helps make people understand each other more, instead of just guessing. The conference also helped me with social skills because I learned not to be shy and just open up to new people and be friends.”
Y6 Linha K (Deputy Head Prefect / Prefect of Events)
“This Leadership conference has helped me develop my communication and collaboration skills, which I can further use in the distant future. Collaborating with different kinds of people that have different perspectives has been fascinating, hearing so many different ideas and merging them together created a branch of diverse ideas.”
