Diversity Arts Series: Jazz Musicians Inspire DCSZ Students

Roy McGrath with alented jazz musicians

- By Edmund Shellard, Director of The Arts

This week, we had the incredible privilege of welcoming back saxophonist Roy McGrath to Dulwich College Suzhou, this time accompanied by a group of exceptionally talented jazz musicians from Chicago, USA. Over the course of three days, they worked closely with our Senior School students, inspiring and mentoring them through engaging workshops. On Monday afternoon, they even hosted a special appreciation session for our Year 6 students, sparking excitement and curiosity about jazz.

The hard work and passion culminated in a spectacular Wednesday evening performance, where our Black Box Theatre was transformed into an atmospheric jazz bar, complete with a vibrant ambiance and refreshments flowing. The evening featured outstanding performances by the Dulwich College Suzhou Jazz Band, our Year 12 music students, and two groups of Year 7 and 8 students - remarkably, they had learned their pieces that very day!

Working with the Roy McGrath Quartet was an eye-opening introduction to the world of jazz. The experience provided us with invaluable insights into university music applications, the quartet’s personal musical journeys, and practical tips for auditions. With consistent support and guidance from the quartet, I not only expanded my musical knowledge but also learned to apply it in real-time performance through soloing. This process deepened my appreciation for jazz’s intricacies and its dynamic, collaborative nature, leaving me with enhanced skills and confidence as a musician. Yun-Shih H

Our time playing music with the band enhanced my understanding and interest towards jazz, and talking with them also helped me a lot with self reflection as a music student preparing for the future. I'm really lucky to have the Roy McGrath quartet enlightening us stepping out of our comfort zone into performing and understanding jazz music. - Cathy W

The visit left a lasting impression, not just in fostering a love for jazz but in demonstrating the importance of embracing mistakes as part of the creative process - an essential lesson in jazz and beyond. We eagerly anticipate welcoming Roy and his ensemble back next year for another unforgettable experience!
